Hi Bryan,

It sure is a lot of money, and how it's going to be spent isn't well understood.

What's striking is how many people, who otherwise might not be especially politically active or interested in this subject, are strongly opposed to the reform plans.

Evan

Hi Dave,

You're right, Lott was talking about breaking the filibuster through a procedural maneuver. Which is pretty much what we're dealing with here.

Either way, the problems with the reform plans go well beyond just the political gamesmanship in Washington, DC. If the plans were popular, there would be no need to go through all of this trouble. As it is today, it's very hard to win on the substance, so all you can do is win on the process.

My point is that the Democrats and the President may be perfectly entitled to use their power this way. I question the wisdom of it.

Thanks for your comment!

Evan

Why does the“nuclear” option definition keep changing?. When the Republicans controlled the Senate, the "nuclear" option was referring to elimination of the filibuster, not reconciliation which they used several times to pass the Bush tax cuts. Now they(republicans) are referring to reconciliation when using it concerning the healthcare bill.

Reconcilliation is an option that CAN be used, but it doesn't mean it should be used for a bill that effects approximately one sixth of our economy. Like you said in your blog, the bill would have very little affect on healthcare for most people in this country and it will cost us 800 billion to 1 Trillion dollars over 10 years. You, I and our children cannot afford this type of irresponsible spending and those opposing the bill should do everything in their power to defeat it.
